Maui Activities

Early Mornings I like to spend my mornings on the water.  I head down to Maui Waveriders around 7 and rent a paddle board.  The surf is relatively calm and great for a morning workout. If you plan to go for multiple days let them know and they'll likely hook you up with a non-trivial discount.

Whale Watching in Maui gives you the chance to get close to some of the world’s most majestic and mysterious creatures: humpback whales. In the winter season, thousands of humpback whales, or Kohola, make the trip to Maui to mate and give birth in our shallow, protected waters. This makes Maui one of the best places in the world for whale watching and one of the top 10 things to do in Maui. During January through March, join us for one of the most unforgettable Maui activities. We've provide binoculars so that you can enjoy them from the Lanai.

Dining I like to go to Nola's for breakfast.  Coconuts has great fish tacos for lunch and Mama’s Fish House has the best dinner, service, and location on Maui.  Tienda del Sol is a great hole in the wall place with arguably the best ceviche on the island (Cash only). Should you want to have an amazing sunset dinner a little closer than Mama’s Fish House you can make a reservation at Humble Market Kitchin which is just down the street below the Shops at Wailea. It is pricey but the view is amazing from the patio dining area.

For a Luau I only recommend the Grand Wailea.  The Luau is spectacular, the menu is second to none, and drinks are bottomless. If you don't get the premium package feel free to get a lei from the nice wahine that will come to you while you wait in line. She'll be inside as well. The premium package allows you to skip the line and comes with a lei. With the standard package you'll get a shell necklace

Happy Hour I like to walk down to 5P (5 Palms) during the off season for their happy hour.  It is from 3pm/5pm to 7pm/9pm and they have a 1/2 price menu at the bar. The beach right there is beautiful and my favorite spot to spend the day. Monkey Pod is great for apps and drinks as well.

After Hours There isn't much open after 9:30 pm.  However, The Pint and Cork is a great place to hangout and watch a game. The Dog and Duck Pub is also close by. They'll likely have music during the evenings. It's possible Nola's will as well.  After 10 or 10:30pm Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar will have 1/2 price menu and drinks. They might have a little Karaoke as well.

Rideshare Should you drive plan on seeing a DUI checkpoint. Rideshare (Uber and Lyft) is abundantly available on the island. If you plan to drink while you're out be sure to use a rideshare instead of driving yourself.

Don’t Miss Out

In the past some of my guests missed out on a few things Maui has to offer.  As such I put together a few quick notes for popular activities.

Maui is a very popular vacation destination as such please be sure to book your activities well in advance. Months in advance in some cases. Also, very few if any will offer a refund for inclement weather.

  • Sunrise at Haleakala National Park allows for booking two months in advance and is normally booked out 45 days. Yes, they release 80 tickets at 4pm two days prior but those go fast. One important note is that the person that books must be present at the gate with a valid photo ID for entry. Checkout recreation.org for details https://www.recreation.gov/ticket/facility/253731

  • Sunrise bike rides at Haleakala National Park are very popular as well. You should book this early https://www.bikemaui.com/

  • Camping at any national park area will book out months in advance. Checkout recreation.org for details and booking.

  • Mama's Fish House If you want to have a special dinner here you should book it now...  otherwise you can enjoy an impromptu lunch there in the bar area. Especially during the high season they will book out months in advance. https://www.mamasfishhouse.com/

  • Zipline This is popular and should be booked a few weeks in advance. https://www.zipline.com/kaanapali. Occasionally there will be an option for water activities included with the Zipline adventure, if that option is offered you should take it.  Maui gets hot and humid. Having a helmet on might not be as fun as it could be when it's 90 degrees and humid out. Just saying…

  • The Road to Hana!  I call this a Maui Rite of Passage. It is beautiful but is a very winding unforgiving road with plenty of one car at a time passes. If you plan to take this road you should leave early (very early), plan stops, make sure you bring plenty of provisions to keep the troops happy, and head home with plenty of time before dark. This is all about the journey and not the destination. Some folks battle thru others just enjoy the ride.  Be sure to drive with plenty of Aloha. https://roadtohana.com/.  When I take folks I normally plan my trip to end with a picnic and swimming at Pua'a Ka'a Falls. It is a great little location with parking and is rather beautiful. That said the Nakalele Blowhole is pretty amazing... For those that are new to this... there are two halves.  The one everyone talks about is the half that begins around Mama’s Fish House... The other half starts after Kaanapali. Both are beautiful but should be done in separate days. If you plan to make it all the way to Hana I would recommend staying. They do require a 2 night minimum but hey you made it all they way why not savor it a bit!

  • Snorkeling in general is great on Maui.

    • Right across the street at Kamaole 1,2,3 and Keawakapu beaches there are good locations with plenty of sea life including turtles.

    • Molokini - the trip to Molokini is well worth it and has amazing visibility.

    • Honolua Bay - The diversity of marine life is second to none.

    • Kapalua Bay - A calm sheltered cove, ideal for snorkeling.

    • Turtle Town Maui & Maluaka Beach - My favorite snorkeling beach.

    • Kaanapali Beach - Black Rock - Rated one of the top beaches in the world. Don't forget to jump off of Black Rock!

We hope you have a wonderful holiday and wish you safe travels!
